About Cat 5

Category 5 cable is the one most often used for cable and telephone purposes. It was designed for high signal integrity. It has been used to carry basic voice services over short distances.

It has been modified and enhanced since first hitting the market to ensure that it can handle the basic needs of certain networks. It is not as expensive as the newer cables available but is a good choice for jobs that don’t involve higher frequency transfers. One of its biggest limitations is distance. Cat5-cable can not be used for longer distances than 320 ft (horizontally).

Cat5-cable supports frequencies up to 100 MHz.
